Tic, Toc

I'm sitting in the shared music office at the church, working on planning a song line-up. I'm distracted by the loud "tic, toc" of the clock and I'm wondering, do you find this sound hypnotic? Perhaps I'm noticing it because the clock sits on the desk and has yet to be hung on the wall. This amplifies the sound. With its metronome-like rhythm I'm finding that every song I'm singing is being done to the tempo of the clock. Fast song? Doesn't matter. It's sung to the slow, steady rhythm of "tic...toc."

The constant, monotonous simplicity of it has a way of making my eyes glaze over, my mind wander and....before you know it, I'm off in Wonderland. So, people who work in offices, how do you do it? I'm thinking an extra BIG cup of coffee! LOL! What sounds do you find lull you to that relaxed state?

P.S. Can anyone tell me the proper spelling for "tic, toc"? My spellchecker isn't picking it up. :-)

I'm fortunate that I don't have a tic-toc clock in my office. I think I would go mad if I did.

Have you ever noticed that some sounds (i.e. tic-toc, or a humming/buzzing) you won't hear until someone points it out to you, and then that's ALL you can hear?

LOL! Yeah, Shar, I've noticed that. My DH always points out weird frequences on microphones. Then all I hear is that weird sort of vibrating/ringing/humming sound. Drives me crazy. LOL!

Shar,

That's so funny... you're right!

Shauna,

Try tick tock?

And repetitive noises don't make me zone out, they annoy me. I can't be hypnotized either (it's been tried several times). I wonder why?

I'm all about absolute quiet -- I slept with earplugs before I had my DD, now I barely sleep because every noise wakes me. I write in the absolute quiet. I don't like to read with noise, even music, though I LOVE music.

I may need therapy :-)

Marianne, I tried that spelling just now, but it still won't accept tock...or toc. *shrug* I guess I'll leave it for now.

And, I sleep with a fan running in our room...to drown out the other distracting noises. :-) I can usually ignore a lot of noise, except when I sleep. Without that fan, I hear every breath and shift of my hubby, the baby's every grunt and groan...from across the hall. It takes me hours to fall asleep. :-)

I'm with you Marianne, repetitive noises annoy me. One of my most annoying is the constant drip of water from a tap. That one can drive me over the deep end, and yet if I think of one of the most relaxing sounds it happens to be the sound of water lapping on the beach. Go figure that! Same source of repetitive sound and yet breeds two very different emotions.

Shauna, the clock is a really bad one in the night when you're bagged and are really anxious to get that much needed sleep.
I guess that doen't lull me, does it?
The only one that actually lulls me is a monitone speaker. Then I have a problem with not zoning out or having a brain sleep. By the way, a brain sleep is where your eyes are still open but the brain is sleeping and you suddenly know that you sitting there staring. As they say the lights are on but nobody's home.LOL

Shar, isn't that annoying to have those earworms pointed out and then you have to live with it?

P.S. Is it called earworms or earwigs or what?

Hey!

Too funny...One night I was so restless I had to take my clock out of my room becasue it was reminding me that I was STILL not sleeping! I like a funny noise...In Megan's room we have a 33 gallon fish tank and when it is not completely full the water trickles...I like that. As long as I have already used the washroom! LOL! If not it just makes things urgent if you know what I mean. None the less, I like it. It is soothing.
